The Waz is the alias of David Wasik, a nickname given to him by friends in the music world in NYC back in the early 90's.The Waz can also stand for The Willful Adventure Zone moving into unexplored territories and experimenting with music to discover new sound possibilities.
The Waz started as a total experiment...building songs from the bottom up that were based solely on drum grooves and electronics. It embraced funk, soul and electronic dance music that became known as Acid Jazz on the international dance scene. Taking the name and using it as a moniker to create music oriented creative projects, David released a solo record in 97' (Melodic Hypnotic) on his new label and formed groups to play his compositions.
The Waz embraced the 70's root of funk and mixed it with the 90's fruit of euro electronic dance music to arrive at its sound. As a group formed in Buffalo around the first CD's release, it morphed from trio to quartet to quintet and had many players of distinction from the Buffalo music scene pass through its doors (many of whom are still vibrant on the scene today doing a variety of interesting musical projects). The band did many road dates and had the privilege of sharing the stage with such luminaries as The Roots, Maceo Parker, The Jerry Garcia Band, Bernie Worell, Particle, Moe., Melvin Sparks and many others on the jam band scene. It was a wonderful 2 year journey in which many live shows were done and two CD's were released on Waz Records; 99's well-acclaimed Organigalactic and the 4x3 EP of 2000 along with many smiling faces seen dancing to the band's magical captivating sound at its live shows.
Nowadays, The Waz has returned to the fruit the music that inspired its creations. As a solo artist, David continues to experiment and has touched upon the ability to hybridize a form of musician/DJ, a project that he's been working on for the past three years. Spinning classics from the 90's Acid Jazz scene, he does live re-mixes of them by coloring the tracks with electronic textures and live percussion, breathing life into this cool sound and making it new once again. In a live performance setting, he introduces an underground music to many who didn't even know it existed...and they're up and dancing...celebrating it once again.
David Wasik's The Waz live performance is an upbeat celebration of life that features songs of love, songs of trials and tribulation and songs with a positive message and uplifting dance vibe. Currently, David is handing out shakers to audience members at his performances for them to participate in the celebration of the rare groove sound and become one with the performance. And man, is it fun.
