What is the Waz?

The idea behind The Waz Solo Electronic Percussion Program is to create a hybrid sound of ambient electronics and align them with pulsating rhythms. The sounds that are implemented into the compositions, you would otherwise never hear paired together. Chinese gongs combined with Indian Tabla, for example, are carefully arranged in a marriage of cultures. The end result creates a feeling of peace and transcendence. You can relax and float with the ambience of it or you can be swept away by the incessant beats. What you will hear as a whole will be rhythmically charged soundscapes that are innovative, inviting and entertaining.

We would be nothing if it were not for those who came before us whose shoulders we stand on to see into the future. With that being said, The Waz bases the foundation of his musical creations partially on the concept of the music concrete movement  and cites such pioneers of the electronic movement as Tangerine Dream as influences. These recent discoveries have lead The Waz to be re-created into the solo event that it is today.  Though not striving for the analog synth epics that Tangerine Dream produced, it’s the pulsating mindscapes that influence the sound in this new direction of re-inventing oneself.
Whereas  the role of melody took precedence in Tangerine Dream, it is often obliterated with psychedelic effects with The Waz, allowing for the rhythm and percussion to shine over its newfound accompaniment  (think Miles Davis’ Nefertiti – where he flip-flopped the roles of rhythm section and melodic instruments) . This is electronic space music fueled by hypnotic pulsations, not Jazz.

The pieces are lengthy and produce a serene electra-glide on the journey down the highway to where one’s imagination will take them. In the words of Klaus Schultze from Tangerine Dream, “It’s music for short movie clips in your head. It encourages  the listeners to use their imagination in order to make the music complete. The listener has to complete the music by adding  some of their own fantasy to it.”

If you can imagine a soundtrack for science fiction mixed with world percussion  rhythms and trance-dance beats, then you have entered the newly evolved  W.illful A.dventure Z.one . It’s not space disco or space rock, though it does incorporate alien synth sounds and futuristic noises into the mix. And you won’t find the synth sounds being played pianistically, these are noise generating machines that will be played with their original intentions intact, without the cheese.

The Waz sound has always been highly prized by Hipsters and the like, and this extension of dance- trance psychedelia will continue to feed the insatiable appetites of those who feel the need to be transported outside the confines of this everyday world.
